
In Greek mythology, Pandora was the first human woman, created by Hephaestus on Zeus’s command to punish mankind for Prometheus’s theft of fire. Zeus gave Pandora a jar as a wedding gift, which contained all the evils and misfortunes of the world. Pandora was instructed not to open the jar, but her curiosity got the best of her and she opened it, unleashing disease, death, and many other bad things into the world.
As Pandora hurried to close the jar, only one thing was left inside — Elpis, the spirit of hope. While the evils now roamed freely bringing pain and suffering, the hope remained trapped inside Pandora’s jar.
